The Last Time...With Carlos Moya
by ATP Staff|
Former World No. 1 Carlos Moya talks to ATPChampionsTour.com ahead of competing at the Legends Cup in Mallorca, Spain from 5-8 October. The current coach of World No. 1 Rafael Nadal reveals ‘The Last Time’…
I missed a flight?
Two days ago (laughs)! I was going to St. Petersburg and I had a connection in Frankfurt. The flight was delayed due to bad weather from Mallorca and we got to Frankfurt with a very short time and I missed the flight. I had to spend the night at the hotel at the airport. Actually the plane was there, but they closed the doors already and they didn’t let me in. I saw the plane, it was 20 metres away from me!
I lost something important?
I don’t remember the last time I lost something really important. Sometimes I forget where I left a few things but I end up finding them. But I don’t remember now losing something very important. I don’t remember.
I paid money to rent a tennis court or buy tennis balls?
Here in Mallorca like a year ago. I had to rent a court to practise.
Being famous helped me?
Probably to get a table in a restaurant, I believe. I don’t remember where or exactly when, but maybe a couple months ago. It helped because they didn’t have a table and I showed up and they had a table.
I strung a tennis racquet?
Maybe 25 years ago. I had to. At the beginning you try to save money and I was stringing my own racquets. Not always, but sometimes.
I cooked for myself and others?
Last week. I used to cook a lot for myself and sometimes for others. It was a barbecue. We did a barbecue at home.
I met a childhood idol?
I don’t really remember that. I was not the kind of child having too many idols so I don’t really remember. And one lesson I learned from this year is don’t ever meet your idols because you can be disappointed.
I shared a hotel room with another player?
Last year when I was with Milos [Raonic] we were not sharing rooms but sometimes we were sharing an apartment. I don’t know if that counts. We were staying at the same apartment. This year in Acapulco I was at the same house with Nadal, but it’s not that we were sharing rooms. With a player in a hotel room, maybe 20 years ago, something like that.
I asked someone famous for an autograph or selfie?
I met the actor Kevin Spacey and I asked him for a picture, maybe five years ago. That was just for fun. I like him and I think he’s a great actor, so I asked him for a picture.
I beat Rafael Nadal at something?
We have a table game that we play a lot during the tournaments, so the US Open. Parchís.
Moya will compete alongside Mark Philippoussis, Alex Corretja, Tim Henman, Fernando Gonzalez, Thomas Enqvist, Mats Wilander, Henri Leconte and Mikael Pernfors.
