Anders Jarryd
Anders is a former Wimbledon singles semifinalist, multiple Grand Slam doubles champion and a Davis Cup winner who has stayed in incredible shape since his transition to the ATP Champions Tour. Now in his late 40’s, Jarryd lives in Germany and still trains and plays tennis almost every day.
The Swede turned professional in 1980 and won his first tour doubles title in 1981 in Linz, Austria. One year later he captured his first top-level singles title, also in Linz. In 1983, Jarryd won his first Grand Slam doubles title at the French Open, partnering fellow Swede Hans Simonsson. In 1984, he finished runner-up in the men's doubles at the US Open, partnering Stefan Edberg, but it was in 1985 when Jarryd enjoyed his best year on the circuit as a singles player. He reached the Wimbledon semifinals, losing to Boris Becker, reached No.5 in the rankings and No.1 in the doubles rankings. He and Edberg ultimately won Grand Slam doubles titles together in 1987, at the Australian and US Opens.
His other major doubles partner was John Fitgerald, with whom he won four more Grand Slam titles (two Wimbledons, one French, one US Open). He won eight Grand Slam doubles titles in all. He scored a shock win over pre-tournament favourite Becker in the first round of the Australian Open in 1993, the year that he won his final singles title in Rotterdam. He won his last doubles title in 1995 in St. Petersburg.
