Set in the vast d’Coque Arena in the heart of Luxembourg’s financial district, this ATP Champions Tour event attracted some of the Tour’s most legendary names in its maiden year, and is set to do the same in 2010. The undoubted highlight of the 2008 tournament was the encounter between old rivals John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg. With a capacity crowd creating an electric atmosphere, Borg and McEnroe put on an enthralling show, with the American edging the contest in a Champions’ Tie Break.

Despite Luxembourg being the the smallest country to host an ATP Champions Tour event, the tournament attracted huge and knowledgeable crowds, showing the appetite that people from Luxembourg have for the sport of tennis. The d’Coque Arena in Luxembourg is also host to a women’s WTA Tour event held in October. The 2008 champion was Russian Elena Dementieva.

Luxembourg is a small, landlocked country bordered by France, Germany and Belgium. Both French and German are spoken there, along with the native language, Luxembourgish. The country has a population of less than half a million, but has a highly developed economy and financial sector. The most famous tennis player from Luxembourg is Gilles Muller, a big-serving left-hander who has beaten Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal at Grand Slam tournaments in recent years.

  • Goudenbour’s day job is to work for the Luxembourg Tourist Board.
  • John McEnroe ended a three year long title drought on the ATP Champions Tour when he claimed the trophy in Luxembourg in 2008, beating Henri Leconte in the final.
  • Tournament director Luigi Coduti is also the manager of former World Number One Justine Henin.
