Todd Martin
After turning professional in 1990, Todd took several years to hit his stride on the ATP World Tour. His breakthrough year came in 1994 when he reached the final of the Australian Open, losing in straight sets to Pete Sampras, a man with whom he would have many a battle throughout his career.
A lot of Todd’s success came on grass courts. The American has two Wimbledon semi finals to his name and also clinched the prestigious pre-Wimbledon Queen’s Club title, defeating Sampras in two tie break sets in the final.
Another of Todd’s career highlights was winning the Davis Cup title for the USA in 1995. Todd played a vital role in the final defeat over Russia, teaming up with Pete Sampras to win the crucial doubles rubber. It is one of Todd’s remaining ambitions to become US Davis Cup coach.
Todd’s final flourish came in 1999 when he reached the final of the US Open, this time narrowly losing out to fellow American Andre Agassi in five scintillating sets.
Todd now resides in Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida with his wife, Amy and three young children. As well as playing on the ATP Champions Tour, Todd commentates for US sports network ESPN and dedicates a lot of his time to the Todd Martin Development Fund, a scheme he set up to provide tennis coaching to deprived youngsters in the Lansing area, where he was born.
