Carlos Moya
Carlos is one of only a handful of tennis players to have reached three of the greatest heights in the sport, winning a Grand Slam singles title at Roland Garros in 1998, reaching the World Number One position the following year, and helping Spain to win a Davis Cup title in 2004.
The Spaniard first made an impact on the ATP World Tour in 1995 after winning his first Tour title in Buenes Aires at the age of 19. He then embarked on a rapid rise up the rankings and less than two years later he found himself in the final of the Australian Open. Despite losing to Pete Sampras in straight sets, Carlos had proved he could be successful on hard courts as well as his favoured clay.
The following year was to be his greatest, winning the French Open title at Roland Garros. Not only did he beat fellow Spaniard Alex Corretja in the final in straight sets, but he also dispatched pre-tournament favourite Marcelo Rios in the quarter finals. That year, he also reached a career-best semi-final at the US Open, and finished runner-up at the ATP World Tour Finals.
One year on, Carlos fulfilled another ambition by becoming World Number One after finishing runner-up at the Indian Wells Masters series event.
Although no other Grand Slam successes were to come, Carlos’ career did reach a final peak in 2004. In the Davis Cup final, he won two critical singles rubbers against Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish, as Spain beat the United States 3–2 in Seville, Spain.
After battling a foot injury for a number of years, Carlos officially announced his retirement from professional tennis in 2010. On the 18th of August that year Carlos’ girlfriend, actress Carolina Cerezuela, gave birth to their first child, daughter Carla.
