Former World No. 4 players Thomas Enqvist and Greg Rusedski prevailed in competitive matches on Friday at the Brodies Invitational, setting up a thrilling final between them at the beautiful Gleneagles Hotel.

Enqvist outlasted seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and fellow Swede Mats Wilander 6-4, 4-6, [10-4]. Little separated the two players throughout the match, but Enqvist found another gear with his powerful baseline game to race through the Champions Tie-break.

“It was a lot of fun. Mats was a hero for me growing up and is now a friend,” said Enqvist. “He was my captain in Davis Cup and watched me win all of these big titles in my career, so to share the court with him now is an honour.”

In the opening match of the day, Rusedski survived a late surge from former ATP World Tour doubles specialist and local favourite Colin Fleming to advance 6-4, 6-3. Fleming fought back from 0-5 in the second set and had break points to get back on serve in the second set, but Rusedski hung tough for the win.

“I thought I played pretty well. It was a tight first set and then Colin had a comeback at the end, but I was pleased with my performance overall,” said Rusedski. “The final will be an attacker against more of a baseliner, so it’ll be a good contrast in styles.”

Rusedski and Enqvist are familiar foes that first faced off in their junior days. They played nine times on the ATP World Tour, with Rusedski leading their FedEx ATP Head2Head 6-3.

Saturday’s schedule will kick off with a third-place playoff between Wilander and Fleming, followed by an exhibition doubles match featuring 2004 Roland Garros doubles champion Xavier Malisse, Wilander and two of Scotland’s most promising junior players. Rusedski and Enqvist will wrap up this year’s Brodies Invitational with the championship match.
