Edberg and Rios to Clash in Portugal

One of the most fascinating match-ups on the ATP Champions Tour could take place in Portugal after Stefan Edberg and Marcelo Rios both agreed to compete at the Vale Do Lobo Grand Champions CGD, 11-14 August.

Edberg, one of the most classical serve-and-volley exponents ever to pick up a tennis racquet, will be making his debut at the popular event in Algarve. Rios, the 2006 and 2008 champion, will be looking to regain his form after losing all three of his matches in Sao Paulo recently.

On the ATP World Tour, they played only once, a match that Edberg won 6-3, 6-3 in Rome in 1995, but their contrast in styles should make for fascinating viewing.

The tournament in Algarve is well-attended by holiday-makers enjoying the summer sunshine, and is one of the best on the ATP Champions Tour.

Edberg, a two-time Wimbledon champion, is popular wherever he goes, and is sure to be a hit in a location inhabited by so many British tourists at that time of the year.

In 2006, Rios won the event on his debut year, beating John McEnroe in the final. Their first meeting, at the tournament's cocktail party, was particularly memorable. You can see the look in their eyes on the picture in the Algarve event page.

Last year, he beat Goran Ivanisevic in the final to win the title.
