Rusedski Claims First ATP Champions Tour Title

Greg Rusedski won his first ATP Champions Tour title after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Stefan Edberg in the final of the Vale Do Lobo Grand Champions CGD. Rusedski, who had lost to Cedric Pioline in the London Masters final last December, dominated a high-quality encounter. His serve was typically powerful and piercing and he broke Edberg right at the start of the match. The Swede showed some of his trademark volleying skills in front of a packed crowd to break back, but thereafter Rusedski took control.

“I’m very happy to have won my first ATP Champions Tour title,” said Rusedski. “Especially by beating Stefan - someone that I respect so much. I’ve enjoyed the week very much. Vale Do Lobo is a beautiful resort and the organisation of this tournament was very good.

Edberg was disappointed to lose, but happy to get through to the final, particularly after straining calf and thigh muscles earlier in the tournament. “I’m actually quite pleased with the way I played this week,” said Edberg.

“It’s always nicer to win in a final, but to reach the final is a good feeling. I enjoyed the tournament and the resort here a lot and I’m now looking to playing in the Paris event in September and in London in December.”

The third place position went to Fernando Meligeni after the Brazilian defeated Marc Kevin Goellner in a titanic match, 6-7(9), 6-1, 14-12 (Champions’ Tie-Break). Meligeni jumped to the No.1 ranking in the South African Airways Rankings as a result.
