Ivanisevic Re-lives 'Greatest Moment'
Goran Ivanisevic admits that he is still frightened that he will wake up one day and discover that he didn’t beat Pat Rafter in their 2001 Wimbledon final.
Ivanisevic will come face-to-face with the Australian for the first time on a tennis court since that famous Monday final eight years ago when they meet at the AEGON Masters Tennis (1-6 December) at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The Croatian is hoping that it might finally sink in when he sees Rafter in London again. “I still don’t know how I won, I still don’t know why I won,” said Ivanisevic, of his Wimbledon triumph. “That day was so strange - Monday, 12 o’clock final. I was so happy that it was all going to be over, and after that last point, when I held the trophy, when I came back home, it was all like a dream. Even now, when I look back at the tape, I still think I am going to lose! But when I look back, it’s the greatest sporting moment in my life."
While he hopes to beat Rafter at the Royal Albert Hall, he promises that they will be all smiles off the court. “Pat is a great guy, a good friend, and we had an unbelievable final on that Monday at Wimbledon,” said Ivanisevic.
“I don’t think anyone who likes tennis will ever forget that match. This is a new match, but people are going to remember that match, and so anyone coming to this match is going to have a good time remembering it.”
The pair will face off on Saturday 5th December after being drawn together in Group A along with 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash and defending champion Cedric Pioline.
Group B will feature Stefan Edberg, Greg Rusedski, Mark Philippoussis and Younes El Aynaoui.
The event is the final tournament in 2009 on the ATP Champions Tour - a circuit of former World Number One tennis players, Grand Slam singles finalists and Davis Cup winners. Each event can also invite two wild cards of their choice.
