Carl-Uwe Steeb
Steeb turned professional in 1986, and won his first top-level singles title in 1989 in Gstaad. A left-hander, he would go to great lengths to run around his backhand and crunch his monster forehand. It was effective too, as his three wins in four matches against Andre Agassi would prove.
Physically, he was always in superb condition, and he could often outlast opponents. His best singles performances at Grand Slam events came in reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open in 1988, the US Open in 1991, and the French Open in 1992.
Steeb was a member of three German Davis Cup winning teams, in 1988, 1989 and 1993. In the 1988 final, Carl-Uwe won a marathon five set match against Mats Wilander, which contributed to Germany’s 3-0 trouncing of the Swedes.
He organises tennis tournaments for the German Tennis Federation.
