Rusedski Takes Title At Brodies Invitational

Tim EdwardsGreg Rusedski wins his first Champions Tour title of 2017.

Greg Rusedski picked up his first ATP Champions Tour title of 2017 at the Brodies Invitational, defeating longtime rival Thomas Enqvist 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday at the beautiful Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.

Little separated the two players throughout the match, but Rusedski’s serve on the fast indoor court proved to be more effective. They played nine times on the ATP World Tour during their pro careers, with Rusedski leading their FedEx ATP Head2Head 6-3.

“It’s been a long time since I won one of these ATP Champions Tour events. It’s nice to be back in the winning circle but for me it’s all about being with friends on the tour again,” said Rusedski. “Brodies and Gleneagles deserve a Champions Tour event, having run this tournament for a number of years. Every year it gets better and better, and we had packed crowds on both days this year. What more could you want?”

The victory also puts Rusedski in a tie with Juan Carlos Ferrero for the top spot in the ATP Champions Tour Rankings. Enqvist moves into a five-way tie for third place with Jonas Bjorkman, Fernando Gonzalez, James Blake and Mardy Fish.

In the first battle of the day, 2004 Roland Garros doubles champion Xavier Malisse defeated seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Mats Wilander in an exhibition match 7-6(5).

The next Champions Tour event will be the Legends Cup in Mallorca, Spain from 5-8 October.
