Philippoussis Puts Team Tim On The Board In London

Tim EdwardsMark Philippoussis secures victory for his squad against Team Greg at myWorld Champions Tennis.

Team Tim - comprised of David Ferrer, Mark Philippoussis and team captain Tim Henman - are still in the hunt to be the last team standing at myWorld Champions Tennis. They avenged Thursday’s defeat to Team Greg (Haas, Baghdatis, Rusedski) with a 2-1 victory on Friday, their first of the week at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

”We’re finally on the scoreboard!” Philippoussis said. “It wasn’t pretty, but we’ve done it.”

Ferrer opened up the evening session with a 4-2, 4-3 win over Haas. Both men produced strong serves and well-timed returns to the delight of the crowd. Ferrer secured the lone break of the opening set at 2-2, but Haas rallied in the second set to earn a 2-0 lead. But, as he did plenty of times throughout his ATP Tour career, Ferrer fought back to secure the win.

“It was a great match with really good intensity,” Ferrer said. “Haas is playing really well, so I was lucky in some points. This is such a great tournament. I love playing with the guys and it’s all pretty special.”

Team Greg kept themselves alive when Marcos Baghdatis/Greg Rusedski prevailed in a 4-1, 1-4, 11-9 thriller against Ferrer/Henman. Baghdatis/Rusedski shook off a mid-match surge from their opponents and produced big shots in the final stages of the Match Tie-break.

”We were thrilled to get the win today and I think the crowd enjoyed some of the shots, which is the most important thing,” Rusedski said. “My favourite part was when we had a really long rally and the crowd got excited. It was also lovely to have my family come and watch. It could have gone either way at the end.”

Philippoussis and Baghdatis met in the last match of the night to determine which team would pick up two crucial points. The Aussie broke Baghdatis early in the first set and served flawlessly to clinch a 4-1, 4-3 victory.

”What a pleasure it was to play against Marcos. It’s the first time we’ve played and he’s such a gentleman out there,” Philippoussis said. “Great atmosphere, great crowd and we hope the fans enjoyed it too.”

Saturday’s schedule will see Team Goran - comprised of Juan Carlos Ferrero, Xavier Malisse and captain Goran Ivanisevic - suit up twice. They’ll take on Team Tim in the day session and Team Greg in the night session.

Going into day three on Saturday, the points are as follows:
Team Greg – 4
Team Goran – 2
Team Tim – 2
