After three days of thrilling competition it was Team Europe who lifted the trophy and took the win for the opening ATP Champions Tour Event of 2020.
Haas put the finishing touches on a Team Europe victory Sunday with a 6-3 one-set win against American James Blake in the final match of the ATP Champions Tour event. Haas completed an impressive comeback by Team Europe, which lost the first two matches against Blake’s Team World contingent before winning the next five matches to claim the team title 5-2.
Haas, the Team Europe captain who also was on the winning team at last year’s competition here, won two of his three singles matches.
“I always love coming here to Florida this time of year,” said Haas, who retired from ATP Tour competition in 2018. “You don’t take it too seriously anymore, but James and I have had some great battles. It was a lot of fun.”
Team Europe clinched the team title earlier in the afternoon when Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus and David Ferrer of Spain defeated Canadian Jesse Levine and American Vince Spadea 6-0, 6-7(6), 10-3 in doubles. Levine handed Haas his only loss of the weekend in the opening match of the three-day competition Friday night.
