David Ferrer completed a perfect ATP Champions Tour debut at the Legends Cup in Mallorca, taking the title on Sunday with a thrilling 7-6(4), 6-3 win over fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero.
The stadium court was beyond capacity as fans clamored to watch two of the greatest Spanish players in ATP Tour history. Ferrer’s relentless retrieving gradually wore Ferrero down and he went on to claim his maiden ATP Champions Tour title.
”The first set was the key and the second set wasn’t easy, but perhaps my fitness was better,” Ferrer said. “It was an unbelievable week. The court was so full and the people were enjoying the tennis. This was my first ATP Champions Tour event, but I think it must be one of the best events on the schedule.”
Sunday’s schedule kicked off with Mikhail Youzhny outlasting two-time Mallorca champion Carlos Moya 6-7, 7-6, 10-2 in a third-place playoff. Youzhny was also making his ATP Champions Tour debut this week.
”It was a good match and a fun atmosphere, with some very nice rallies,” Youzhny said. “I enjoyed my first ATP Champions Tour event and I will try to do some more matches.”
The next event on the ATP Champions Tour is the season-ending Champions Tennis, held at Royal Albert Hall in London from 28 November-1 December.
