David Ferrer made the most of his ATP Champions Tour debut on Saturday at the Legends Cup in Mallorca. The Spaniard booked his place in the final with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Mikhail Youzhny.
“It was tough. We both started really good, but maybe my fitness was better in the second set. We tried our best and I did a really good game,” Ferrer said. “I remember we played each other once in Valencia and I lost, but it was a great match and a really good memory.”
Ferrer scored wins this year over current Top 10 players Alexander Zverev and Roberto Bautista Agut before concluding his ATP Tour career in May. His match toughness showed in the lengthy baseline rallies and the Spaniard gradually wore Youzhny down to the delight of the home crowd.
Awaiting him in the final is fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, who won an all-Spanish battle with two-time Mallorca champion Carlos Moya 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. There were plenty of flashy shots from both players and even a tweener from Ferrero, who overcame a broken string on match point to win their hard-fought clash.
”It’s always nice to play against Carlos. We’ve played a lot of matches against each other during our careers, even on the [ATP] Champions Tour,” Ferrero said. “It’s always tough against him.”
Ferrer leads Ferrero 7-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry.
