Juan Carlos Ferrero claimed the first win of the 2019 Legends Cup on Friday, beating Thomas Enqvist 6-3, 6-4 in Mallorca.
The former World No. 1, who claimed 13 of his 16 tour-level trophies on clay, recorded his second ATP Champions Tour victory of the year against the Swede to reach the last four. Ferrero also defeated Enqvist in straight sets en route to the Brodies Tennis Invitational title in June.
“It was a long time not playing against him on clay… In the second set, I felt a little bit better than the first set. I think we played a good match.” Ferrero and Enqvist contested three FedEx ATP Head2Head encounters between 2001 and 2002, with the Spaniard claiming victory in two of their three meetings. Their most recent clash on the ATP Tour came at the 2002 Rogers Cup.
Ferrero will meet two-time Legends Cup champion Carlos Moya (2016-’17) for a place in the championship match on Sunday. The pair will resume a memorable ATP Tour rivalry, which featured eight victories for Ferrero from 14 encounters between 1999 to 2007.
In their first meeting, Mikhail Youzhny defeated home favourite Alex Corretja 6-4, 6-3 to join Ferrero in the last four. The Russian star, who retired from the ATP Tour in St. Petersburg last year, will face fellow ATP Champions Tour debutant David Ferrer for a spot in the final.
“It was an interesting and nice atmosphere,” said Youzhny. “You can feel the competition… We were just talking before the match [about how] we never played against each other.”
