Team Lendl win the first stage of the Legends Team Cup

August 2, 2022

The final day of the Legends Team Cup in Pula had all to play for and it didn’t disappoint. Team Lendl started with a 6-3 lead and with every match counting for 3 points it was essential that they got off to a good start.

Marcos Baghdatis and David Ferrer came out the blocks in form for the first singles tie of the day. Enjoyed by all, the match saw winners from both players and the final victory going the way of Team Lendl as David Ferrer got the job done 8-3 to put Team Lendl in a very strong position going in to the doubles.

A fantastic encounter between Lleyton Hewitt and Radek Stepanek against Marcos Baghdatis and Tommy Robredo, arguably the best match we witnessed over the week, started with four breaks of serves. With swings of momentum the match was decided on a championship tiebreak 10-7, giving Team Lendl all the points they needed to win the first stage of the Legends Team Cup.

Up next was a clash between Tommy Robredo and Tommy Haas. Recently retired Robredo put on a show under the lights to win 6-4.

The overall score was 12-6 to Team Lendl. After the match, winning captain Ivan Lendl shared how impressed he was with his team’s performance and the importance of sport around the world – you can see his interview and Catch up on the match highlights here.
